Good technology day

September 8th, 2004 · Posted by Skuds in Technology/Work · No Comments · Technology, Work

When I got to work I found that the help desk only had one person on it, and he was from the previous night shift and dying to go home. Of the five people rostered, 2 were on holiday, 1 was working the late shift and not due until lunchtime, 1 had phoned in sick and 1 had overslept…

I was persuaded to go in and cover so Eddie could go home. I was going to just cover until the oversleeper got in and one of the holidaymakers arrived having been called in, but ended up staying all day. It was just like the old days when I used to manage the help desk. I was a bit rusty, having not used the helpdesk systems for many months, but soon got back in the swing of it.

This evening I decided to do some maintenance on my iRiver music player. I upgraded the firmware from the Internet, reformatted the hard drive, and copied all the music back to it so that the directory tree is stored at the start of the drive. I also downloaded some freeware file-synching software which all works fine. At the end of all that the bootup time for the device has gone down from about 26 seconds to about 8. Believe me, that extra 18 seconds seems like a lifetime when you just want to start listening to music. I think that makes today a good technology day!

Mum called today. She is going to come and visit on the day the new TV arrives (10 days time. But whos counting?) So I will just have the new toy set up and will have to leave it switched off while I’m sociable…
