Vintage Year?

October 6th, 2004 · Posted by Skuds in Music · No Comments · Music

Looking at the 30th anniversary editions of Dark Side of the Moon and Tubular Bells, it struck me what a good year 1973 must have been to have two of the all-time great albums released in it. And not just them but a few others which are certified classics. Is there a single year with so many landmark albums released? Hows this for a list…

Tubular Bells / Mike Oldfield
Dark Side of the Moon / Pink Floyd
Innervisions AND Talking Book / Stevie Wonder
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road / Elton John
Band on the Run / Paul McCartney & Wings
Lets Get It On / Marvin Gaye
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath / Black Sabbath
Yessongs / Yes

And on top of that were albums from Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Steely Dan, Iggy Pop…

Its a shame I was only 11 that year and couldn’t really appreciate it.

The only year that comes close to that is 1977 (Rumours, Marquee Moon, Never Mind The Bollocks, Heroes, Exodus, Bat out of Hell, New Boots & Panties, Oxygene, Trans-Europe Express, Peter Gabriel 1, etc.) Hmmm. Maybe 1977 gets the vote after all?
