Remembrance Day

November 14th, 2004 · Posted by Skuds in Life · No Comments · Life

Today was Remembrance Sunday, and our girl was marching with the army cadets and laying a wreath after the town’s service, so we all went down to watch. Previously I had not had much to do with the Remembrance business until last year, when as Deputy Mayor, I went to the the town’s other parade at Lowfield Heath. Jayne and I met the people from the Royal British Legion there who were all friendly and fun people, and we both found the service very moving. Having no official capacity this year, we were spared the church service but watched the parade and of course took photos.

Well that was the idea. Unfortunately, we found ourselves in exactly the wrong place to get a photo of Chrystal laying her wreath because she was right on the other side of the war memorial with a huge lump of stone between her and the camera. Even the press photographer didn’t get a clear shot, although he had a lovely picture of her colleague saluting.

I’m still a bit awed by all these old boys hobbling along with their rows of medals. They might be old and (mostly) frail now, but seeing them you remember that they were teenage soldiers or sailors – and it reminds you how we are all going to be like that one day, and thats if we are lucky.
