I have just been watching the first test flight of the new Airbus A380 “super-jumbo” on the news.
In France there was a crowd of 50,000 to watch the take-off, live broadcasts on television, and a giant screen in the local town square. There wasn’t quite as much fuss about it in the UK, but really it does make you proud to be European!
It is a timely reminder that countries like the UK really do not have the size to compete with America on their own, except in niche markets (like Dyson), but by co-operating the countries of Europe form a unit which is bigger than the US, and better able to support companies which can compare to Boeing, General Motors or EDS. (I think I mentioned this last year when Europe beat the US in the Ryder Cup)
On the same day as this flight, I received my election material from the BNP and UKIP who would both take us out of the EU tomorrow if they could.
