The Horror, The Horror

Jayne and I went out to lunch today at Zari’s, an indian restaurant in Ifield. It was for all the (Labour) candidates in the county elections. A few couldn’t make it, but most did. It was a lot more fun than the meeting we had in the Labour club the other day about the elections – I was stuck in the chair for that.

Over lunch, Jim Smith mentioned that he was going to the cycle race in the evening. Well, I didn’t even realise that the races were on this weekend. I went last year in an official capacity and really enjoyed it, so I thought I would pop along this year. I took Chrystal with me, as she was getting a bit bored. The event was not very well attended, which is hardly surprising given the terrible publicity. It would be a shame if this did not continue since it is a national event (well part of one anyway). I don’t think the layout was as good as last year: the finishing line was too near the church end of the road. That was unavoidable with the building works in Queens Square. Maybe next year the finishing line will be back where it belongs, giving a nice long straight run up to it.

Stewards were handing out programmes, which had a questionnaire to fill out. Question one was “How did you hear about the cycle races.” It didn’t really seem right to give the answer “the mayor told me over lunch.”

It was great weather for the races though, just like last year. Maybe too good, because we left early so I could get the lawn mowed while there was enough light.

Tonight we watched the ‘100 greatest war films’ on Channel 4. When it got towards the end I was trying to guess what would be in the top ten. It was pretty obvious that Private Ryan, Apocalypse Now and Schindler’s List would be up there, and hoped that The Great Escape would be too. The real surprise was seeing Apocalypse Now only at number two! Still… it was good to see Lacombe Lucien in there, even if it was right towards the bottom, but I wondered why The Snow Goose was not somewhere there.

(I since checked on the Internet Movie Database and see that it was only a one-hour TV movie with Richard Harris and Jennie Agutter. I really had thought it was a ‘proper’ film. There does seem to be a new Snow Goose movie in production though – with Bily Connolly in it. I wonder if that will be any good?)
