African music on tap

Here is something to look forward to – an African channel for satellite TV. Its going live in the US soon and is supposed to reach here sometime next year. Please let it be a free channel!

In the meantime, I have been listening to a few internet radio stations (isn’t broadband wonderful) for African music and other foreign stuff.

The best I have found so far is a Swedish channel, SR Sverige. The web site is all in Swedish, but the ‘Lyssna’ button has “listen” written on it. The pop-up player very helpfully tells you what is spelas just nu and what is coming up nasta.

Another goodie is a French-based Rai station called Onlyrai.com which plays rai music. Only. The player doesn’t give track info, so if you really like something I don’t know how you track it down. Maybe the website gives tracklistings for the shows or something somewhere, but my French, although miles better than my Swedish, is not up to that task.

Finally there is African Spice from New York, which plays African music of all sorts. Again there is no track information, but the music is great.

Now I just need to find a channel playing French ‘nouvelle vague’ and rock music which gives ‘now-playing’ track details. I am at least 10 years behind the times, still listening to Elmer Food Beat, Noir Desir, Les Negresses Vertes and La Ruda Salska.
