How does Blogger make money?

October 26th, 2005 · Posted by Skuds in Life/Technology · No Comments · Life, Technology

I am reasonably familiar with the new media pardigms and the post-dot com business models – enough to spout such atrocious jargon anyway – but I can’t see why Blogger/Blogspot are in business.

Don’t get me wrong, I am happy that they exist. From my point of view they are providing a facility which is totally free of charge to me, easy enough to use, and not even encumbered by advertising. To do this they must at the very least have some staff, servers with plenty of storage and a high capacity fixed internet connection. I just can’t see what is in it for them.

I can understand something like Statcounter which also provides a totally free service, but that is a bit limited and charges for an upgrade for those who need a bit more. Its the same with Flickr.

I know that Blogger is now owned by Google, and its blogsearch uses Google and all that, but before the buy-up the original Blogger must have had some sort of business model which predicted a profit to be able to get funding. Unless the business plan was just to get bought up by a larger company.

I am too cynical to think that someone is spending a lot of cash just to make my life easier, but I really can’t see what is in it for them. Any ideas?
