Whiteboards

November 30th, 2005 · Posted by Skuds in Work · No Comments · Work

Today I actually regretted my antipathy towards the phrase ‘political correctness gone mad’ as it seemed almost appropriate.

In our help desk room there are several whiteboards on which information about current jobs is written, and I am on a bit of a mission to get rid of them and thus force the help desk staff to use the computer system properly.

I was talking to my boss about this and he said that we were no longer calling them whiteboards but wipe boards. He seems to think that the term whiteboards might be offensive to some people.

It might be coincidental that we have just had a couple of Africans and a West Indian join the department. Today I interviewed a Nigerian and a West Indian who should start next week, and I am talking to a West Indian tomorrow, who used to work for me to try and get him back. I don’t imagine for a moment that any of them are in the least offended by us deciding to call a board which is white a whiteboard.

I’m not sure I can bring myself to use the term wipe board, so I will just have to accelerate my plans to dump them. I suppose I should welcome this evidence that the company care about upsetting staff, even though it chooses to express it in such a bizarre way.
