Happy Christmas in spite of Microsoft

December 26th, 2005 · Posted by Skuds in Life · No Comments · Life

We finally had a happy Christmas in spite of Microsoft.

Jayne likes those role-playing detective games on her computer (CSI, Gabriel Knight, etc.) and I got her some Nancy Drew games as a present to keep her going. There are about a dozen games in the series and and I figured it would be a good idea to start at the beginning.

What I didn’t realise was that the first games were written before Windows XP was around and the bloody things would not load. With all the various mp3 players to get working I didn’t get round to looking into this problem until late in the day.

I checked on the software house’s website and found a reference to this problem but no help other than a link to Microsoft’s knowledge base. That took me to a page with about 20 steps to get round the problem of missing or corrupt autoexec.nt and config.nt files.

After a lot of messing around, copying, notepad editing and swearing I finally got it all working just before midnight and Jayne could, at last, get some use out of her presents.
