Moving from Blogger?

January 29th, 2006 · Posted by Skuds in Technology · No Comments · Technology

I am thinking about whether to move all this stuff and nonsense onto my own server/domain, mainly so I have the option of running more scripts and SSIs, which might give me the incentive to learn how to.

The question is, do I just change the Blogger settings so that it publishes via ftp to my domain instead of to Blogspot, or do I go one step further and migrate completely to WordPress or similar?

What are the pros and cons? I have already experimented by moving another blog to my domain and it seems to work OK but that is still using Blogger.

Blogger is dead simple to use, so I am already familiar with it, and its free. Also the move to my own server was smooth enough. One strange thing is that old posts are still on Blogspot but new posts only appear on my domain.

WordPress has more facilities – but it looks easy to fall into the trap of spending far too much time tweaking. Some comments I have seen suggest that people have had trouble moving their archives across.

I spent hours experimenting last night, settingup new blogs, filling them with test posts, then moving them to see what happens, and I’ll probably do the same today – I don’t like doing data migrations without trial runs and regression strategies! I will also be searching high and low for descriptions of others’ experiences migrating to help me make up my mind.
