Nine days that shook London

Tonight BBC2 showed a documentary called Nine Days That Shook London. This is the one which they had talked to me and the other Andrew about, but decided not to include us. (I’m not bitter. Honest. No really I’m not.)

Having declared my interest I can continue… Actually I didn’t watch the film too closely. I missed the start and got distracted towards the end, but it seemed to be OK. The real problem is that it was trying to cover 5 main landmarks – Live 8, the Olympics 2012 announcement, the bombings, the G8 outcome and the commemoration day in 75 minutes. Thats only 15 minutes per day.

I know I have a short attention span sometimes, but even I like to get a bit more detail than can be provided in that sort of timespan. Perhaps I was not the target audience.

Over the holidays there have been films about Live 8/G8 and the bombings which were much longer so there was not much chance of getting any further in-depth. I imagine the point of the film was to capture the feeling of having so many big things happening in, or affecting, one place in such a short period of time so you have to take it in that spirit.

Because I work in London and was at Live 8, and because the assistant producer had mentioned the format of the film, I have spent some time in contemplation of that week. I don’t know how long, but certainly a lot more than 75 minutes, so whatever thoughts the film was meant to provoke in the viewer had already been pre-provoked for me.

Still, I did enjoy seeing the scenes at Singapore and Trafalgar Square for the Olympic announcement. With 2012 creeping ever closer we have to keep remembering that feeling and keep our fingers crossed that we, as a country, can do justice to the efforts of everyone on that Olympic bid.
