Whatever happened to breakfast?

It suited me to travel to Guildford early today. The idea was that I would get my normal train before all the rush hour crowds and fill the time before the courts opened by having a nice traditional fry-up in a greasy spoon cafe.

Unfortunately the greasy spoon cafe is an endangered species. Everywhere I looked there were Costa Coffee shops, Caffe Nero and Starbucks. If a place had a sign reading cafe it turned out to be in the continental sense and had the word ‘patisserie’ somewhere on the sign. In most cases the word ‘maison’ appeared somewhere in the name too. Even workmen wearing their high-vis jacket and hard hat were sitting at a counter sipping a skinny latte.

I know Guildford is supposed to be a bit posh, but surely there is a proper cafe somewhere. It is, after all, a university town: don’t students still enjoy a big fry-up after a night out?

On the plus side, I got a lot of exercise walking up and down the hilly streets looking for some artery-clogging sustenance.

Just back from a night on the piss and desperate for some grease in Guildford; wandered far and wide only to (finally) chance upon a KFC with an enormous queue. What happened to chicken express or the million other halal places found in any self-respecting british town centre?!?!!?
