Yesterday I realised that there is something I have hardly every written about but which is an enormous part of my life – my iRiver mp3 player.
It insulates me from the racket of mobile phones and rattling laptop keyboards for at least 12 or 13 hours every week on my commute – and because I use a type of earphone which goes inside the ear I do not even have to turn the volume up high and annoy everyone else.
The best thing is that I have the 20Gb drive almost full and set it to random play so its not so much a walkman but more of a diceman. Having given up any choice in the matter (beyond deciding what to fill it with in the first place) I can spend the entire journey to and from work being surprised and sometimes delighted by what it throws up.
On the way home on Friday the iRiver played me:
- You’re Gorgeous by Babybird
- Look Inside America by Blur
- I’m So Glad by Cream
- Opera by Geusch Patti
- Feuerzeug by Ideal
- Gangsta’s Paradise by Coolio
- Secret Names by Ozric Tentacles
- I Got Nothing/I Got Shit by Iggy Pop
- Crazy In Love by Eminem
A selection I would never have consciously chosen in a million years. I had forgotten what a very strange song You’re Gorgeous is.
