The delights of canvassing

March 6th, 2006 · Posted by Skuds in Politics · No Comments · Politics

Having a full-time job, I have hardly ever done any canvassing on a weekday morning, so today was a bit of a treat made possible by having to take the day off work for an emergency dentist appointment which was at 12:50.

Here is Jayne, on the doorstep with our MP, Laura Moffatt. I find that its a good morale-booster for party members when the MP comes out with them. Members of the public are always impressed and surprised to see their MP out knocking on doors.

I don’t know why because Laura is out doing this sort of thing all the time, and has been for all the time she has been in Parliament. I guess nobody believes it until they see it for themselves.
All together there were half a dozen of us out there and we covered quite a lot of ground – mainly because so few people were in.

That is not to say it was a waste of time as we were getting to talk to some of the people we normall would miss on a Saturday morning.

It has been suggested that weekdays are a good time for us to be out as a lot of our natural supporters will be at home then. Personally I find that a bit patronising, to suggest that our supporters and voters are all retired, unemployed or caring for children. Although its true that these people should be our supporters, they are just as likely to be non-voters.

There were a few amusing incidents. There was a lady hanging around in her front garden wondering who all those people were who had walked past. As I was still catching up, having been delayed chatting to someone, I told her. Her reaction was to say we could keep our Labour party, they are all useless, but “of course I’ll vote for Labour, the other lot are even worse!”
They all count!
