Three reasons I will be voting for Labour in May

March 25th, 2006 · Posted by Skuds in Politics · No Comments · Politics

  1. The candidate is my wife. She would kill me if I didn’t.
  2. The uselessness of our existing Tory councillor.
Before our campaigning this morning I was talking to an old lady in the church foyer. She has a problem with something. Strictly speaking its not a council problem, but its something causing her great hardship, and it can easily be sorted out.I may sort it out, or I may leave it to Jayne to sort out, but either way it will take very little time. The old girl said that she had taken this problem to our Tory councillor but he just told her to talk to Laura Moffatt (our Labour MP)
  3. The qualifications of our candidate.
While we were out canvassing, Eugene came back from a house and said that the chap he was talking to was having trouble starting a job because of delays getting a criminal record check. Jayne was able to get some details from him and give some good advice. At this point I realised that her life so far has been the perfect preparation for being able to help solve all sorts of problems.

Her work at schools (and as a school governor and parent) and doing in-home care has given her a good working knowledge of what goes on in schools and some aspects of social services, including how the CRB checks work. Her current work has trained her in how to help with benefits claims and immigration issues.

On top of that, her home care job gave her a knowledge of the streets and routes through town to rival most cab drivers, and her own dealings with our housing association have given her plenty of experience in getting results from social landlords.

Add to that her work with the community centre charity and her police visitor work, and I think she has had dealings with just about every area which matters. She even has a first aid certificate!

There was no planning to Jayne’s career, but I reckon that if you wanted to plan one to make someone most suitable for doing a councillor’s work, you could not do it any better. She probably knows more of what she needs to know for casework that I did after four years on the council.
