Jungle Adventure

April 15th, 2006 · Posted by Skuds in Life · No Comments · Life

This is the new jungle-themed adventure playground in at Creasys Drive in Broadfield. There was some sort of grand opening event on Thursday, with about 1200 children, drum workshops and lots of other things which went down well with the neighbours. I have not yet been up close, but it looks impressive from a distance.

Talking of neighbours, to protect those who live in houses with gardens which back onto the playground there is planning permission in the pipeline to erect a large fence along the boundary, and when that goes up there will be CCTV cameras on the site as well.

So far so good, but I can’t help wondering why the planning permission was not put in a lot earlier. A couple of years ago the council opened a similar adventure playground with a wild west theme at Cherry Lane and within a very short time some vandals broke in and torched it. There was a real spate of arson in the town a couple of years ago. It seems to have died down now, but I still worry a bit about this huge, new, wooden structure.

After the Cherry Lane experience, I would have thought that the sensible approach would have been to get the big fences and CCTV installed well before the building was complete. I really hope the place survives long enough for the protection to be put in place. I gather there is to be one more adventure playground built in the town. In the unlikely event I get elected next month I think I will have a have a word with the relevant department at the council – otherwise I’m sure Jayne will mention it: she has some strong views on playgrounds anyway.

Anyway, it does look like a neat place. Its just a shame it wasn’t there 5 years ago so I could go on all the ziplines and climb the netting. (Well OK. Maybe more like 30 years ago…) Our kids used to go to Creasys Drive quite a bit during the school holidays, but it was limited and they looked forward to us taking them across to Cherry Lane. They are a bit old for all that now, but its great that parents with younger kids now have something of this scale on the doorstep, even if the admission charges are a bit of a sore point with us.
