The city at night

April 18th, 2006 · Posted by Skuds in Life · No Comments · Life

I've just taken a short walk around the block, as a sort of lunch-break.  I guess its not recommended to go wandering the streets here at 4:00am, but I needed to clear my head a bit.

Its a bit strange seeing the streets so empty where there would normally be huge crowds, but there are still a few people around, the odd night bus, a police car lurking in a dark alley and a couple of shops open along York Rd.  Seeing a shop open at that hour of day, there is a strange temptation to go in and buy a Mars bar or can of Coke just because you can – even at the sort of prices someone would have to charge to make such opening hours economical.

I took a few photos of course.  I'll have to wait until I go home to see how they turned out.

The most disconcerting place was the road tunnel under the railway lines.  As daylight does not really permeate the place it always has the lights on there and at 4am it looks more or less exactly the same as it does at 4pm, except with no taxis.  Its a bit like the office really: as we have no windows it does not really feel like night time unless you catch a glimpse of the CCTV monitor. It just feels like its a quiet day until you go to the mess room to get a drink at see the darkness outside.
