Broadfield on the telly again

May 3rd, 2006 · Posted by Skuds in Politics · No Comments · Politics

I was watching the local news on the BBC this evening and there was our community centre again.

This time it was film of a meeting where Geoff Hoon and Eugene Sully were talking to youngsters (and listening too I hope) about why they (the young people. Not Geoff & Eugene. Duh.) are so uninterested in politics, followed by a brief soundbite from Eugene outside the centre. I think that Eugene came across very well and the centre was looking particularly good.

What does get to me though, is the way every discussion on voter apathy trots out the same lazy cliche about how 23 million people voted for Big Brother. No they didn't.  There were 23 million votes, which is not the same thing. It could have been one million people voting 23 times each, or just Eugene's mum and Anthony's mum voting 11.5 million times each.  Unless anyone is seriously suggesting that political elections are held on the basis of telephone voting with as many votes as you want/can afford, then its a pointless comparison.
