We Are The England

I can't work out how to embed a YouTube video in WordPress, so I shall have to make do with an old-fashioned link to the video for We Are The England – the 2006 World Cup song by Spizzenergi. Do have a look: its a very catchy song.

The video has been online for a couple of weeks now, but I didn't know until this afternoon when I saw Spizz in London.

He was having a bit of a party to promote the World Cup song, after watching the England team demolish Jamaica.

We watched some vintage footage of Spizzsexual in concert and Spizzoil home videos and some old Spizzles/Athletico promo videos, and then there was some live music.  Apparently Filthy Macnastys can only have duos playing (quite sensible given the size of the place) so it was not the full band. Instead it was Spizz and Dave Scott.  Dave is not actually in the band, but was in the original Spizzenergi in 1979 and Athletico Spizz 80 in 1980, so it was an interesting line-up.

I had a chat with Dave and I think that the only thing stopping him from being one of the nicest people in show-business is that isn't in show-business any more. He was in the band when I first saw them 27 years ago, supporting Siousxie & the Banshees and The Cure in Chelmsford. Doesn't time fly? It only seems like 26 years ago.

It was only a few songs, but they went down well and Dave overcame the problems of not having played them live for many years and not having rehearsed this time round.  There was quite a crowd of Spizz fans, and not all 40-somethings who remember the first time round either. At the end Spizz sang a couple of songs over backing tapes – ones which would be too ambitious to do with just a guitar accompaniment – and everyone was joining in with The Model's na-na-na-na-na chorus. At this point I realised that Spizz had hit upon the Kaiser Chief's formula a few years before them, although he didn't have quite the success they have had with na-na-na-na choruses.

To add to the atmosphere there was also the film crew who are following Spizz around all month to make a World Cup diary documentary

The only downside to it all was that I didn't get away early enough to get to Paul's get-together in the Strand.
