Green door trivia

September 9th, 2006 · Posted by Skuds in Music · 2 Comments · Music

I was fascinated to read about the truth behind the green door in today’s paper. Its a lovely story.

We all remember the Shakin’ Stevens song Green Door which was No. 1 in 1981, but apparently the song is about a real green door in Bramerton Street in London. In the 50’s and 60’s this door lead to a clandestine lesbian club called the Gateways.

So the song was basically about a bloke who knew there was something going on but, could not get through the door to find out exactly what . He was trying to get into a lesbian club but didn’t know it, and was getting increasingly frustrated at not knowing what he might be missing. I bet Shakey didn’t know about all that which adds an extra level of irony to the song. If it crops up on the radio at any time I shall be listening to it with a new appreciation.

The song is a bit of an earworm though. Merely by reading these lyrics in the story I have been unable to get the tune out of my head all day, so stop reading now if you are susceptible to that sort of thing…

There’s an old piano and they play it hot behind the green door
Don’t know what they’re doing but they laugh a lot behind the green door
Wish they’d let me in so I could find out what’s behind the green door.
