Keeping it green?

September 25th, 2006 · Posted by Skuds in Life · 2 Comments · Life

Saturday’s Guardian had a 100-page ‘green living guide’, stuffed full of information and guidance on how to tread lightly on the planet.

I can’t help thinking that the message was a little undermined by the sheer size of the Saturday paper, with 166 ‘Berliner’ pages spread across 8 sections, a glossy colour magazine, 100 pages of the small guide section, and a couple of advertising inserts. I’m sure they would argue that it is all recycled paper, and that my paper will be recycled again, but even so it all has to be transported and distributed around the country, and more pages means more power used in printing.

I wouldn’t mind so much if I ever read more than just the main section, the review, the football parts of the sports section and parts of the magazine.

But the supreme irony was that the paper which contained this guide to green living also had a 16-page special section on travel to Australia and New Zealand. I didn’t read it, but I am fairly sure it was not suggesting that tourists walk there. The normal 14-page travel section featured Tokyo on the front page.

So the (mixed) message is: be good to the environment and relax by flying to Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
