Lucky, Lucky Oxford

Not content with thrashing Crawley in the top 100 Labour bloggers league, Oxford inflicted another body blow on Crawley tonight when Oxford United stole three points from Crawley Town live on Sky Sports.

I think this is about the third time that Crawley Town have been on Sky Sports, but I still can’t get used to hearing commentators talking about the Broadfield Stadium on TV.

I know I am a bit biased, but I really do think that Crawley deserved at least a draw from this game. It was an entertaining match too – better than a lot of Premier League games I have seen on the box.

On paper we were very much the underdogs, since Oxford are unbeaten all season and are clear at the top of the table while Crawley are only just off the bottom, but that our position is artificially depressed by the ten points deducted for going into administration. For large parts of the game Crawley besieged the Oxford penalty area and Oxford seemed content to pack the defence and take it, with the odd attack on the break.

There were good chances at both ends, and with the game at nil-nil, Crawley were finishing strongly with waves of attack and several missed opportunities in the last ten minutes. How cruel then for Oxford to break out and score a goal in the 91st minute. Totally heartbreaking.

It was still a pleasure to see the living legend that is Jeff Stelling broadasting live from Broadfield, even if he did chose not to unleash his devastating armoury of poor jokes on his admiring public.

Another familiar face was Rufus Brevett, Oxford’s West Ham old boy. Apparently he is 37 now, but he didn’t look a day over 27 tonight.

We may have lost, but I think we put on a show which will worry a few other teams in the league and if the team can play like that every week they will surely beat relegation – as long as the club stays afloat.

Most ironic sight of the evening was seeing an advert on the back of the Oxford players shorts for a company called “Debt Dr.” when it is crawley Town that is up to its arse in debt.
