Duke Nukem

If there is one reason above all others why I have not written much here for a few days, it has to be Duke Nukem.

The other day I found out about EDUke32 and downloaded it. This is a re-write of Duke Nukem for Windows XP/2000 and its brilliant. You have to have your original software as it needs your .GRP file in order to run, so its no good if you don’t already have the game sitting around.

I had heard of other little programs for getting Duke Nukem to run under XP, but they all looked so complicated to install for variable results, but EDUke32 was absolute simplicity to run. As a bonus it renders all the graphics in more detail – but does not change the essential look and feel.

Getting the add-ons like Duke It Out in DC, Nuclear Winter or the Caribbean one is a bit more complicated apparently, but I’ll cross that bridge when I have worked my through the original game.

I can’t have played this game for at least 5 years, but I am amazed how many details I can remember.

I was on the verge of setting up an old Win 98 computer just to play this game, with all the hassle of swapping screens and keyboards and everything, but now I can let the old PC die gracefully after all. Or can I…. I also can’t run Carmageddon, and have been feeling a real urge to play that again. Anyone know of a way to get that running under XP?
