Safe Mode

November 23rd, 2006 · Posted by Skuds in Technology · No Comments · Technology

What I learned today was something which saved me a lot of grief with my computer.

I put the hard drive from the old PC in the new one as a slave drive and copied everything across, but a few directories would not copy. I kept getting an ‘Access Denied’ message on the ‘My Documents’ part of the old PC.

Slightly annoying as that contained the 21Gb of music which I had ripped from my CDs over a period of 2 years and all my old e-mails and address book. A few other bits and pieces as well, but they were the main concern.

It turns out that the way round this is to start Windows in ‘safe’ mode (by hitting F8 while the PC boots up). Once in safe mode you have access to the security tab on folders and can go in and take ownership of those slippery access denied folders.

After that everything is available.
