It is not often these days that something happens which is genuinely surprising, but today I found something. I opened my post to find a letter inviting Jayne and I to the Mayor’s civic reception in January.
It would not be an over-statement to say we were both shocked – but amused in equal measures. Neither of us can think of anything we have done in the last year which would lead to us getting invited. Since I left the council the previous two (Labour) mayors didn’t invite us to anything, so this was totally out of the blue. The letter was addressed to “Jayne and Andrew” so it must have been something she has done!
I can think of dozens of good reasons to decline, but the parsimonious part of me says that I forked out for a dinner suit in 2004 expecting to need one and have not worn it since… I wonder if it still fits?
