Pension tracing

December 6th, 2006 · Posted by Skuds in Work · No Comments · Work

One other piece of information from the union which might be more practical than pointing out the dangers of re-enacting the French Revolution while under the influence of alcohol is the promotion of the government's Pension Tracing Service.

Now that many of us move from job to job during the working life and may not always remember what pension scheme we were in during our twenties it is a handy way to get the details of old schemes and that vital contact address for them.

The URL is www.thepensionservice.gov.uk/atoz/atozdetailed/pensiontracing.asp in case anyone is interested.  Its disappointingly low-tech though: you fill in a form online which goes to a civil servant who looks it all up and writes back to you. I was expecting to be able to browse and search through the list of 200,000 schemes they have details for.

They would have fun tracing my first pension scheme. The company was involved in takeovers ever year and every time the firm was taken over, took over another firm or just merged, a new scheme started with a new name.
