Beside the seaside

One of the few drawbacks to the new job is that it cuts down my opportunities to indulge in my new interest in photography.

One reason for this is that I can no longer walk out of the door of my workplace and see County Hall and the London Eye right in front of me, with lots of photogenic landmarks within easy lunchtime walking distance – now it takes more than five minutes just to get from my desk to the perimeter of the site and then I am faced with the rest of the industrial estate.  The other reason is that I can't take a camera to the site anyway. I think they have you shot for that.

Anyway, the result has been that I haven't so much as taken a snap for weeks, but today Jayne was going down to Worthing for a meeting of the West Sussex county Labour party, so I tagged along with the intention of having a look around and taking some pictures while she was locked away in the Labour Hall.

Of course, as soon as she went into the meeting the clouds gathered, the light disappeared and rain started spitting but I stuck with it.

I quite like Worthing. I always equate it with Walmington-on-Sea from Dad's Army. Mind you I like seaside towns anyway, especially ones with piers – even if they all look like tiny little toy piers compared to Southend – and I love the atmosphere of seaside resort towns out of season.  Somehow they just epitomise England, the way you get one single each hut open with the residents sitting outside on deck chairs with blankets wrapped round them, and one or two hardy souls out on the beach with umbrellas up.

I could see myself moving out to the coast for my twilight years – except Jayne finds it depressing, having been born and brought up in a seaside town.
