What really depressed me in today's papers was the research from Mintel about our national spending habits, with spending on foreign holidays, eating out designer clothes and other such essential all increasing while paying off loans and credit cards came lower in everyone's 'spending priorities'.
Is our problem not that the economy is wrong but that we are not, as a society, grown up enough to cope with success? Why do I have a sinking feeling that those who complain the loudest about the 'nanny state' will be the first to blame the government when they finally spend their way into bancruptcy?
I'm as bad as anyone else with all my techno-toys, stacks of books and fondness for takeaways but if I crash and burn I'll know its my own fault and blame it all on my ex-wife myself.
