Dad rock

I had a look in HMV to pass a few minutes on Friday and noticed that Father's Day is imminent.  You can tell because there is a whole display near the door containing endless CDs of 'drive time' classic rock, Top Gear all-time classics, classic rock, and ELO's greatest hits. Basically you can't move for 'dad rock' in there.

Who is it that decided all dads like Born To Be Wild, More Than A Feeling and (Don't Fear) the Reaper anyway.  Its the same with the Father's Day cards which imply that all fathers enjoy golf, classic cars and slippers.

The cards don't look any different to how they did when I was a kid, and even though I am 45 myself I consider most of them to be too old-fashioned for my own father, let alone all those fathers in their 30's.

What is it with this assumption that having managed to get someone up the spout a bloke will immediately forget that he happens to be into soul, rap, nu-metal or whatever and suddenly become a Radio 2 listener craving easy-listening metal?   All those children will go into HMV clutching their pocket money (or donation from mum) and go straight for the easy choice of the Best Dad In the World CD.

Can't complain though… I am quite fond of dad rock, and the only problem I have with it is that you I am likely to already have most of what is being pushed.  I did notice a new Megadeth album out though – just in case any of the sprogs read this.

We were out shopping just before Mother’s Day and noticed that that well known record store, Marks and Spencer, was plugging Barry Manilow CDs for Mother’s Day. I thought, if I bought that for my mother she would be so very very insulted!

I think even Barry’s Mum would be a little deflated 🙂
