Facebook

The papers have had a recent glut of stories about Facebook and which famous people have which other famous people listed as friends, so I thought I would have a look at it myself, despite being a bit sceptical of all these social networking sites.

It turns out to be extremely easy to sign up, but harder to find out what the hell its for. So now I have a Facebook, but no idea what to do with it. Obviously I joined the Bloggers4Labour group and the Labour Party one, but then ground to a halt. Finding old school colleagues is out of the question – my old school isn’t even listed. Even my old company isn’t listed – though it had something like 70,000 employees at its peak.

Looking on the bright side, the day after I dipped my toe into Facebook I read about a recent study showing that Facebook users tend to be better educated and better off than MySpace users (amongst American teenagers).

The fact that I am thousands of miles and a quarter of a century away from being an American teenager must be why I am not feeling particularly well off… its either that or its the new brakes on the car, the washing machine packing up, and Jayne’s continuing unemployment which is making me feel more than usually skint.

It gets us all in the end. I thought at first that it was a bit of a teeny thing, and yet within 6 months or so, I find myself looking in several times a day, playing with the gadgets, and with a large proportion of the people I know on there. Rather like B4L, perhaps, all sorts of social opportunities suddenly open up that you didn’t expect.

I’m not sure I want to spend any time touting for friends… but ‘gadgets’ sounds good. I didn’t know there were gadgets 🙂

But now, thanks to you, I am in the awkward position of having one friend. Having no friends is fine, it shows pure laziness in not being bothered to add any. Having one just makes it look like you only have one friend.

I suppose it could turn out to be useful, once I work out what its for.

I must say that the “Graffiti” gadget is very cool: it opens a little Flash environment that somehow allows you to paint with coloured brushes and save the resulting image on someone’s profile. E.g.:

(ahem) “It’s amazing what they can do nowadays”
