Bring back the birch!

So who said this in the Sunday papers?

If I was in charge I’d clamp down on immigration right now. I’d bring back the birch. I’d bring back military service.

and

My family voted Labour. As I got older I liked Margaret Thatcher because she is a strong woman, like my mum. Also, in terms of the money I earned, Thatcher let me keep more.

I feel let down…

Reading Wright’s answers to that questionnaire, I alternated between laughing and covering my face in horrified embarrassment in a way I hadn’t since I read the notorious Mick Hucknall one.

I loved that bit when he talks about his son’s salary and he says words to the effect of: “Kids these days don’t know they’re born. When I were a lad we ‘ad to mek do wi’ 20 grand a week and were grateful fer it.”

Stop that immigration and they’ll be no bleedin’ footballers for us to watch. The man is a complete embarrassment.

I still have fond memories of his time with West Ham and his unaffected reactions to the modern art at the World Cup… but they are a bit tarnished now.
