I was amused twice today by things written by ‘the public’.
One was a book review written by someone on Facebook’s Visual Bookshelf application. It was a very short review of Shakespeare’s Anthony & Cleopatra, which said:
This one was longish I found. It dragged. Too much dialogue.
Umm.. Its a play! And just like every other Shakespeare play its all dialogue. Thats what plays are, with a few exceptions like Pinter or Shaw who indulge in enormously lengthy and detailed stage directions.
Just to show that such things are not limited to the Internet’s user-generated content sites, there was something in the Guardian which caught my eye too. It was a letter about inheritance tax, which said:
This will become more true as more people pay inheritance tax: the 40% of people quoted as potential payers are not just the super-rich, but the majority.
Did I miss a meeting? Has the definition of ‘majority’ changed since I was at school? As I am unlikely to be paying inheritance tax does that put me in the 60% minority?
