Massive erection

August 27th, 2007 · Posted by Skuds in Life · No Comments · Life

Today we erected a gazebo on the back of the house.  It is an enormous thing, which we took camping with us last year and could easily have fitted our old 4-man tent under with room to spare.

When Jayne and the kids had a weekend camping trip earlier in the year a couple of the legs got damaged and it was getting a bit fragile to keep putting up and taking down.  We were going to get rid of it, but instead we have now put it in the back garden.

The back of our house gets a lot of evening sun, most of which falls on my computer which is next to the back door, so having some shade there is going to be most welcome.  Also we don't smoke in the house any more, so having a bit of shelter out the back is going to be handy too.

We would have done this ages ago, but the gazebo is not tall enough to allow room for the back door to open.  We thought about putting some bricks under the legs but that would have made it a bit precarious.  What we have actually done is fix it to the back wall above the door, using some plumbing supplies which are normally used for fixing pipes to walls.

This means that the legs on that side are not needed, so I used one section of them (suitably cut down) to extend the legs on the other side. Being fixed to the wall means that the whole thing is a lot more rigid than it ever was when it was free-standing.

So now we have protection from the evening sun and shelter from the rain, and it might even survive high winds. Fingers crossed.
