Mmmm… Starters

August 28th, 2007 · Posted by Skuds in Life · 2 Comments · Life

I love eating out. Let’s face it, I just like eating, but I really enjoy eating out, but recently I realised something about my preferences: what I really like about eating out (or takeaways) is starters.

All my favourite dishes are either starters, extras or side-orders. I think I would be perfectly happy to go out and order a selection of starters.

For example, in Chinese/oriental restaurants my favourite things are satay chicken skewers, spring rolls, chicken and sweetcorn soup and crispy duck in pancakes, with the satay chicken being top of the list. If I order Chinese I know I am going to have that whatever happens. The rest of the meal is just an excuse to have the satay chicken.

In Italian restaurants I do like a proper minestrone, but what really like above all else is bruschetta. In Indian restaurants I am always going to have a peshwari naan, and I will always have potato skins with sour cream at any place which does them.

If somewhere opened where I could have some satay chicken skewers, followed by potato skins, bruschetta and peshwari naan and not bother with a main course at all I would be there in a flash.

And I am a disgrace to the name of woman because I would rather pig out on a starter than save room for pudding. And I don’t even like Death by Chocolate.
My top starters would be crispy duck with all the trimmings, bresaola (like parma ham but luckily made from cows) and pecorino cheese, most vegetable based soups (sounds like a cop out but carrot and lavender soup was amazing). Rob joins you on the satay, with pate a big favourite. And don’t get us started on garlic bread. I’ll start dropping hints to Mum to include satay on the traditional christmas visit grazing buffet…..

I rarely have desserts if I eat out. I really like them, but have usually overdone it on the starters and extras. If you come down here to visit we will have to get a stack of satay chicken from the Chinese in Three Bridges. Best I have ever had – and I have had Satay chicken from hawkers’ markets in Singapore.

    Breadsticks. That’s another one I can’t resist.
