Question of the day

August 8th, 2007 · Posted by Skuds in Politics · No Comments · Politics

There has been a lot of attention given to Tom Cowie’s decision to stop donating money to the Tory party and to join the queue of Tory supporters, members and sympathisers who are lining up to stick the knife into David Cameron.

I was more interested in the tail end of the story in the Guardian where Tom says he will not be converting to Labour – unsurprisingly. This position is largely based on Gordon Brown’s taxation of pension fund dividends and he says:

I am very angry about him taking £500 a week in extra taxes on my pension and what has David Cameron done about it, absolutely nothing… how would you feel if you are 85 and you suddenly had £500 a week taken away from you?

Well I don’t know about anyone else, but if I was 85, or indeed any age, and had £500 a week taken off me but still had so much surplus cash I could throw it at the Tory party in £500,000 chunks I would probably be quite happy. The information missing is how much Tom still gets per week after all these taxes. I have no idea but I’m guessing he is not starving.

What really irks me about those who are more comfortable by a wide margin than nearly everyone else but still complain is that by displaying the traditional ‘politics of greed’ they tempt the rest of us to lapse into the ‘politics of envy’. I really like to think that I developed my opinions based on sound moral grounds, and then some odious twat like this comes along like the Devil tempting Jesus in the desert to generate a nostalgic fondness for the phrase “until the pips squeak”.
