I can’t understand why everyone is so gloomy about sport this week. West Ham won and avoided slipping down the table, the English rugby team turned around a tournament which they started by losing 36-nil and ended up almost winning it, and Lewis Hamilton came within a point of winning the F1 title in his first season.
Out nearly 200 countries in the world we came second in two sports over the weekend. Most places would be quite pleased with that. Instead we are supposed to feel miserable when winning a second rugby world cup in a row or winning the F1 title at the first attempt are both without precedent. Bloody good that we got so close in both cases.
And talking of sport… can I be the first to jinx Spurs by saying that thing about them, the thing everyone said about West Ham in the season they got relegated…. with the players they have they are too good to go down. Let’s all tempt fate by saying it at every opportunity.

Just checked – in his first season in F1 Schumacher finished 14 with 4 points. I also did take the opportunity to gloat over a Sunderland supporting ex-boss. In the nicest possible way! (Which is how you will have to gloat over Jayne when Spurs go down…..)

My TV tells me there has been some kind of snooker tournament going on as well.
