Unexpected

October 26th, 2007 · Posted by Skuds in Life · 11 Comments · Life

On Monday we went up to visit my dad and introduce him to his first great-grandson. On Wednesday I had a call from my sisters to say that he had been found dead in his house.

There will be a post mortem, but it looks like he may have died on Tuesday night from a heart attack. Not great, but he had been expecting a decline followed by spending his last days or weeks in a cancer ward and given the choice he may well have preferred something sudden which didn’t involve hospital food.

It still does not seem real. I took this photo on Monday and he doesn’t look like someone with only a day to go. In fact he was still making plans for what to do with his garden next year, and said he felt fine apart from a stomach problem. He had adjusted to needing to take an oxygen cylinder around all the time, and using a stairlift to get upstairs.

One problem with the sudden nature of it all is that nobody gets the chance to say goodbye. Even though we were only there the other day there was nothing final about it when we left: just a sort of “give us a call if you need anything and I’ll see you again soon” kind of thing. No point in dwelling over missed opportunities, but its hard not to.

So sorry to hear about your dad, Skuds. Take care.

I think we have all been saying goodbye ever since he was first diagnosed. And I think it isn’t just me who has been making a conscious effort to keep in touch more. (Guiltily, I know it would have been hard to have been in touch less). But now, you’re right, it doesn’t feel like quite enough. Thanks for putting the photo up though – something for us all to remember him by.

Deepest condolences Skuds. I know what the loss of a loved one is like as I’ve been through it more than a couple of times. Remember and celebrate the good times and look around you at his successes – just look at yourself. :-))

We can see the family resemblance. It is sad when any member of our great White community shuffles off this mortal coil in the face of increasing alien influx. We are of the opinion that your dad is better looking than you, and probably still is.
Best regards to you & family.

Not that I needed to guess what level of humanity you belong with, nobrim, but you’ve confirmed it with that post. Get off my planet.

Sorry about your dad, Skuds. I hope that from now on everything goes as well as it can under the circumstances.

I saw that photo of him when it appeared on Flickr and smiled at how much he looked like you, but I’ve only just caught up with your blog proper.

(Condolences from a member of the great non-White immigrant community to Nimrod.)

Nimrod, my Dad may have had his faults, but he would have been as insulted by your comment as the rest of his family is. You are entitled to your opinions – I would think the opinion of any normal human being is that this particular post is not the place to air them.

Hello you red piece of shit, the only thing wrong with this news is that it wasnt you!
