I am looking forward to tomorrow: Jayne is back at work, Chrystal is back at school and Charlie is back at college. I went back to work on Jan 2nd and it has been really annoying getting up and going out while everyone else is still snoozing.
I think I got a better deal though. My return to work was on a Wednesday, and we only do a half day on Fridays so I was able to ease back into the work routine with a nice short week. The others have the greater shock of coming out of a longer break and straight into a full week.
Everyone enjoys a moan about getting back into the routine after the Christmas/New Year break but I reckon its the best return-to-work of the year, because (at least in my case)Â the whole place closes down.
Any other time you get a week or more off, there is that nagging knowledge that the rest of the company is busy with sending you e-mails, assigning you more work, making decisions without your input, and generally going about their business. In severe cases you return from a holiday and find that all sorts of announcements have been made in your absence or that you have been moved to a new desk.
I can never quite relax when I use up my annual leave allocation as there is always a little paranoid voice in the back of my mind wondering what everyone else is up to. Its not totally paranoid because I have returned from holidays to find changes have been made a few times now.
And isn’t it great to get back to your desk and find your inbox more or less as you left it?

My favourite times are when all the managers and Head Office types are all at the annual conference (which used to be for two-three days) because the skeleton staff left behind can generally not be bothered to email anything to anyone. Bit of a bitch if you need any important decisions making though…
