There are many benefits of trade union membership as I am always telling colleagues at work, trying to get them to join up. I tell them all about the legal protection offered, extra benefits gained from the company, the pensions advice, the discounts on all sorts of goods and services, and all that but I missed out one thing because it never occurred to me as I never even thought it was a possibility – overseas travel.
Out of the blue today I got an invitation to spend a day this month in some place South of Paris taking part in an event related to the company’s European Workers’ Council. Cool. I have had twenty Euros sitting in my wallet since November, waiting for a chance to be spent. I know it will be an all-day meeting and then straight back to Sussex, but if its not too far from Paris I can still try to get into town the night before and hit the Virgin Megastore on the Champs Elysees or even a branch of FNAC instead of heading for the nearest bar like everyone else. I will be most disappointed if I don’t come home with some new sounds and some cheap fags.
Thats if I go. Still got to persuade the boss.
