From the Argus we have the headline Arsonist handed lighters by mental health staff. The amazing thing is that if you read the story it is even worse than the headline suggests. A man was sectioned for repeatedly starting fires. Staff at the place he was kept say that they deliberately did not take lighters off him because “he needed to learn to take responsibility for his actions“. When the inevitable happened and the bloke set fire to the place they called the police and pushed for prosecution.
Looking wider afield there is another story gripping the imagination at the moment: the French demonstration of anti-hostage tactics where one of the soldiers somehow managed to go into a public demonstration with live bullets in his gun and 17 people were injured. I guess it is some sort of miracle that none of them was killed. Is it just me who immediately thought of the scene in Childs Play 3 where Chucky slips live rounds into the rifles of one of the teams before the military school’s war games?
