Blowin’ in the Wind

September 30th, 2008 · No Comments · Jane

As big bruv points out (in the fine print, I’m told) I haven’t posted anything for a while.  I will happily blame work for this – a University is a fairly lively place to be working in September & October – and it even helped me to forget Skuds’ birthday….
I do still have time for [...]

Can’t Stand Losing You

September 29th, 2008 · 2 Comments · Politics

A decline in membership is something that affects all political parties.  There are surges of interest, but the overall long-term trend is against belonging to any party.  Even so, Dave’s Decline, the recent study by John Mann MP and Mike Joslin  (available at Labourlist.org) should be worrying for the Tories, especially in Horsham and Crawley.

Firestarter

September 28th, 2008 · No Comments · Life

Now that Charlie works he wants to be more independent.  He can’t afford to get his own place yet so he tries to be independent at home, buying and cooking his own food instead of being tied down to family meal times.  I just discovered one small downside to this cunning plan, when he calmly [...]

Remember a Day

September 28th, 2008 · 3 Comments · Music

Friday night was David Gilmour Night on BBC Four, and Gilmour also appeared on Later the same night. I should have been like the proverbial pig in shit, but somehow the timing of it, with Richard Wright so recently dead, sucked a lot of the enjoyment out of it all.

Walk Like An Egyptian

September 28th, 2008 · No Comments · Music

Yesterday I was listening to In Their Darkened Shrines by Nile and trying to work out a few things, like why I have it in my collection and why I haven’t listened to it in the 6 years since I bought it.  The second question is quite easy – I don’t like it very much.

The Only Way Is Up

September 28th, 2008 · No Comments · Life

I was listening to the radio just now and the DJ was talking about his football team which, unfortunately for him, was Spurs.  Trying to keep a positive attitude he said that being at the bottom of the league means that now the only way is up.
Not strictly true though is it?  I think somebody [...]

What’s Going On?

September 28th, 2008 · 2 Comments · Life

Could this be the season that all three newly-promoted Premier League teams survive?  I know it is only early days in the season but already Hull have as many points as Derby got in the whole of last season after beating Arsenal and West Brom have managed a couple of wins to keep them in [...]

Down At The Doctors

September 26th, 2008 · 2 Comments · Life

There was one main reason why I went down to Crawley Hospital’s ‘Urgent Treatment Centre’ last night1 – I find normal GP surgeries inconvenient.  That’s why I like the concept of the polyclinics.

King Of Pain

September 26th, 2008 · 1 Comment · Life

3:30am.  I should think about going to bed now, after having only recently got back from hospital after possibly the most painful and least dignified night of my life.  Nobody in their right minds needs to know details: for a clue just re-arrange the words “drain”, “groin” and “abcess”.

Return To Sender

September 24th, 2008 · No Comments · Technology

In the last couple of days I have noticed a new trend with the bits of spam e-mail that get past all the various anti-spam defences: read receipts.
