Great Gig In The Sky

September 16th, 2008 · Posted by Skuds in Music · 4 Comments · Music

Far more upsetting than the piddling matter of a web server being unavailable was the sad news of Richard Wright’s death.   I guess that settles all the speculation about the Floyd ever playing again.

It is still hard to believe.  He was only 65, and it was all really without warning. I was lucky enough to see Pink Floyd four times: the first time in Sydney in January 1988 and the last time in June 2005 at Live 8 for what turned out to be their last time together in public.  Here is the last song from that set.

One of the saddest bits of news I’ve heard over the last few weeks. I never had the priviledge of seeing PF live but have had more than a few years of enjoyment listening to them – and Wright was a corner stone of that group.

Whilst I am more of a Roger Waters fan and prefer him live; the David Gilmour live set “In Gdansk” is the best I have heard him. With a live orchestra and Richard Wright on keyboards it is simply fantastic. On BBC 4 last night they had part of the concert on which deals with “On an Island” Gilmours last solo effort. You realise watching that just how great a guitarist Gilmour is and far better than Clapton who gets all the praise!!!

I have never really warmed to Waters and I’m not sure why.

Saw the Gdansk thing and I’m looking forward to the DVD so I can see the whole thing and get it in surround sound.

It is already out in a 3 pack (2 CD and a DVD) …Did you see the Pink Floyd Doc on Friday? I thing Roger came out a bit more “warm” than Dave. Geldof revealed that Dave had turned him down for live8. He then rang Roger who seemed to get the thing going. It was clear that Roger enjoyed the reunion more than Dave. My theory is that Dave always felt an “outsider” in PF not having been an “original” and that being outside the Floyd in his Floyd he could control.
