Movin’ On Up

One of the reasons I am not in Manchester enjoying Gordon Brown’s speech with all the other PPCs is a small matter of an office move.  The construction of the new buildings has taken several years now: three? four? I’m not sure, but it is a long time.  The actual moves of laboratories, workshops, test rigs, stores, and a couple of thousand people has been at least two years in the planning.  I am in charge of making sure my own small department moves OK and have some involvement in wider IT issues.  My colleagues and are now within two weeks of our move: it would not be a good time to take holiday to go Conference!

It would be like one of the top CERN boffins slaving away on the Large Hadron Collider for years and then taking vacation on the week it is turned on. Today I had some training so I would be able to take staff on guided tours and explain the new environment to them and I learned lots of things.  Primarily I learned, from the labels on some site plans, that we are not being moved after all.  Nor are we being re-located as we expected. Instead we are being ‘decanted’.

Is that because they expect us to whine about the facilities?
