Shooting Star

September 12th, 2008 · Posted by Skuds in Life · No Comments · Life

The round-up of the Paralympics on the BBC tonight showed a bit of the shooting competition, where Matt Skelhon won a gold medal.  I hadn’t seen coverage of Paralympic or Olympic shooting before – possibly because it is one of the least TV-friendly sports so doesn’t get shown much

I’m still not sure how shooting is any more of a sport than, say, darts but it was interesting to see.  In the first round there were quite a few absolute maximums, to the extent that somebody who scored 599/600 failed to qualify for the next round!   Personally I think that when a sport gets to that level of precision with so many getting 100% they need to make it a bit harder. Maybe move the targets a bit further away or something. Otherwise you end up with a group who are all as accurate as each other and the whole competition is abotu not making a mistake.

Got to love Skelhon’s hairstyle though.  The bright red mohican with ‘GB’ shaved into the side is not likely to catch on like Beckham’s styles do, but that’s OK.  I also liked his attitude with the interviewer who had run out of things to say and asked “So you’re from Stilton, where the cheese comes from?”   He said “No. Where the cheese is named after. It’s actually made in Melton Mowbray.”

I do hope that bit of trivia crops up in a future pub quiz…
