I did enjoy seeing Metallica on Jools Holland last week. I’m especially glad that I watched the Friday show after having seen the live one because they played totally different songs, as did Carla Bruni and Sway. ((I was impressed by Sway))  Kings of Leon might have played different songs but I would have found it hard to tell.

Based on the two songs off of Death Magnetic that I have now heard I can’t wait to get my hands on it next week. The current single has been described by some critics as the weakest track on the album; I hope that is true because it just means that all the others are even better.

Good to see the new bass player, Danny Trujillo, fitting in so well too, although for some reason I can’t stop myself thinking of Terry Gilliam in Life of Brian whenever I see him playing.

And what about that small-scale fans-only concert last week that I failed to win tickets for?  I had imagined that it was a small intimate concert in a sweaty club somewhere but it turns out that it was for 20,000 fan club members in the O2!  By Metallica’s standards that is a small-scale show, but not what I was expecting.  I’m still miffed that I wasn’t there.

I have been listening to ‘Death Magnetic’ since last week and I have to say I am very impressed.

In fact, to check how close it was to the ‘classic era’, I played Master of Puppets (including the track you used for the title of this post) just beforehand, and it does come pretty close.

Even Unforgiven III is not rubbish.

I expect to be listening to it on Monday – what better way to celebrate turning 46?

I’ve been a Metallica fan since the days of Cliff Burton and glad to say that “death magnetic” is the best album since the black album.
Oh and by the way the newish bassist is Rob Trujillo not Danny Trujillo…

Gah! You know what it is – my mind keeps stirring up the names of Trujillo and Danny Trejo. Must try harder.

Got to admit I never really listened to Metallica until I bought the black album and then I had to catch up later.

Never say you’re going to be 46 – how old will that make me……

There were various fan shows – a tiny one for Radio 1 on the sunday night, then the bigger one at the O2. I was at the O2 show and it was fantastic – the new album is brilliant.

Sounds good. I went to a small fan show of Crowded House at MTV once – just a hundred or so in the audience. Interesting to get up close to a band like that.
