Fort. Photo taken in about 1870

Fort. Photo taken in about 1870

I don’t really do quizzes on this site, but when I saw this photo I had to find out whether anybody would have any idea where it is/was.

So… any guesses as to the location of this fort?  Full brownie points for the exact location, but I’ll be impressed if anybody gets the town/city or just the country right.

Guessing only but the style of the building is a pastiche of medieval so based on the date of the photo and the state of the repair of the building I would say it was Napoleonic.

If that is correct then it is almost certainly in the south of England.

Looking at the boats they look like pleasure craft – harbour/river/lake – rather than full-blown sea going stuff. So maybe it\’s at a navel base somewhere.

Assuming it\’s this country (a guess at best) I would say somwhere like Chatham or Posrtsmouth.

A very well worked-out guess, but it could hardly be more wrong 🙂

I was quite surprised by the photo because I have been to the place several times and had no clue that a fort used to be where the current (famous) building is.

Oh, phht. Whatever. Sydney Opera House.

  • Skuds

    Yes. Large version here.

The fort was completed in 1821 and then demolished in 1901 to make way for tramsheds which were in turn knocked down to make way for the opera house.

Did you know that Rob, or did I give too many clues?

    Oh fish-hooks……

Well as it’s Sydney in Oz in 1870 that’s as good as saying it’s England……. :-)) And I was correct over a harbour/river/lake.

Oz’s outlook and “style” was so like an England in the Southern Hemisphere up to the end of WW2 even if the climate wasn’t. Hey, they even had one of my relations as Premier of NSW at the turn of the 20th Century! (In case that statement was not boring enough he was Sir John See and was christened “See or Seekings” in Huntingdon and as a small child his family emigrated to Oz and dropped the “kings” bit of the name).

Rob says it was a lucky guess. I figure he is very lucky since he married me…..

Oh, f***, what? That was a complete flippant guess! I had no real idea!
Oh no…. I suppose this means I’ve got some psychic gifts. I’ll see if I can do some mental influence over the Atlantic this evening 🙂

I believe you. For confirmation I looked up “spawny get” in my dictionary and there was just a photo of Rob there.
