The Final Countdown

November 24th, 2008 · Posted by Skuds in Life · No Comments · Life

After all the fuss about dancing competitions, premium phone line scandals, cat-naming competitions, and everything else, it is good to see a TV company making an anouncement that can only be good – Jeff Stelling is to take over Countdown!  He may be virtually unknown, except to those who watch, or have ever watched, Sky Soccer Saturday but to those people he is a legend.

Only this month there was an interview with him in Word magazine that mentioned the Countdown job, but only have him say that the job had never been officially offered to him, that he would find it hard to fit around the Sky job and his family and that Alexander Armstrong was doing it anyway.  All that turns out to be wrong, and good job too.

Thinking about it, he must be the closest you can get to Richard Whiteley’s sense of humour and we can expect loads of Whiteley-esque so-bad-they-are-funny jokes and puns.  I say “we” but I won’t actually see it unless I am laid up with flu at some point in the future, but it’s good to know he is there. Best of all, he is not giving up the Sky programme – streamed online every Saturday for those of us who do not pay for Sky Sports any more.

As long as no contestants or Dictionary Corner inhabitants make the mistake of dissing Middlesbrough or Hartlepool…
