Party in Session

December 10th, 2008 · Posted by Skuds in Life/Work · 1 Comment · Life, Work

We are well into the Christmas party season now.  Last week Jayne was out at various functions for four nights in a row.  One was my company’s annual do.   Being the sort of miserable bastard who doesn’t really like Christmas much I normally avoid company parties, but after hearing tales of how lavish they are I thought I would give it a go.

It is fair to say that I was suitably impressed.   There must have been more than 500 people there – each table seated ten and I saw table numbers going up above 50.   There was a three-course meal and each table had a couple of bottles of red and a couple of bottles of white on them.   After the meal was over the curtains were opened to reveal fairground dodgems set up outside – but to get there you had to get past the enormous chocolate fountain…

Back at work this week, all I heard were complaints that it was all not as lavish as in previous years!  I think they have been spoilt – it was a great night.

Leaving the party, I spotted a sign that still makes no sense to me.  I am assuming its a bit of golfing jargon or something (the do was at a hotel which also does golfing).  The sign just said “Absolutely no trolleys unless fitted with a hedgehog”.   This is one of many reasons why I do not golf.  I would need to get myself a Linguaphone course and and English-Golf dictionary first, and when would I find time to do all that?

I still have a departmental dinner to look forward to, plus the canteen’s Christmas lunch, and then Horsham Labour party’s dinner, Broadfield labour party’s drinks party and Crawley labour party’s dinner – and a trip up to London to see Manu Chao in the middle of all that.  I think I am actually looking forward to Christmas for a change – just for the chance to relax a bit.   And for the Doctor Who special of course.  And to see what Rojo makes of all the wrapping paper…

He has already set himself the task of undecorating the tree whenever he can.  I keep coming home from work to find tree decorations on the other side of the room.

Rojo’s first Christmas – brilliant! I bet he’ll make to the top of the tree before Christmas Eve. I’m looking forward to the Doctor Who special as well – although I have to avoid colleagues who spend far too much time on Whovian websites and have a tendency to assume we all want to know what is going to happen in advance!

I only have two parties – my work ( a sensible dinner for 8) and Rob’s (a proper knees-up in Manchester). Luckily I am not at work on the day after either so I may be tempted to have a glass or two…
