Hootenanny

January 2nd, 2009 · Posted by Skuds in Life · 8 Comments · Life

I set the V+ box up to record Jools Holland’s Hootenanny on New Year’s Eve, and this afternoon I watched it.  This is far better than sitting through it in real time because you can fast forward through Duffy, Adele, Annie Lennox and any other junk.  In fact I skipped so much I must have managed to get through the whole thing in about 30 minutes.  Basically, the only bits I watched in full were the Ting Tings and the Quartet of Finnish harmonica players.

I must have missed the announcement at the start though.  There must have been one: there always is when an understudy is used.  I imagine it said “this year the part of Roland Rivron is being played by Lenny Henry”.

    Hootenanny!!!!

This is very sad – the individual portions make the show a totally wholesome experience. You haven’t mentioned MR&TV, Sam Sparro or Hold Stead all of hwich were first class, especially Martha Reeve who took a while to warm up and what a treat -even though I persoannly didn’t like the first set of Ting Ting completely it had some merit and the second one was for me much better. It’s the contrasts, the highs and lows of life which make the best ones so utterly fantastic…..if everything is set on a censored medium, that is exactly what you get. zzzzzzzzz

Make some time, get a beer or three and then watch the whole show. I bet you enjoy Ting Ting a whole lot more when they are heard in a balanced context the second time round!

I’m sure the whole show is great if you are there in the studio, and maybe if you are watching it ‘live’ and I do like the idea of a very good, competent band playing for a lot of guests.

Had I the time I might have watched more Martha Reeve if only for the chance to watch Gilson Lavis playing – but to be honest I’m not that keen on the Motown sound: I prefer the Stax and Atlantic stuff.

Most of the show is just cabaret music – I gave Sam Sparro about 15 seconds before reaching for the FF button and cabaret is something to enjoy live or be bored rigid by in the recorded form.

Having said that, I did watch the Stereophonics chap do his songs. Mostly.

Bring back Andy Stewart. We had to watch it as mates were round who are Jools fans and I thought it was total crap. As for Lenny Henry can anyone actually remember when he was supposed to be funny?

Skuds should come clean on this. As kids we used to spend every New Years Eve at a party thrown by Scottish family friends. We were virtually raised on Andy Stewart and were also more than familiar with the complete works of Miss Connie Francis. A strange combination but it made a change from Johnny Cash at home and Wally Whyton at grandad’s.

Ah.. Wally Whyton 🙂 Those were the days, when Johhny Cash and Lonnie Donegan had equal status and credibility to Pinky & Perky in our eyes.

Somehow NYE is not the same without a singalong to Donald Where’s Yer Troosers?

if it’s good stax you want there is a great Album by Eli ‘paperboy’ Read who hails from Chicago,it’s great modern music which sounds so like the cool Stax sounds ,there also a good one called Atlantic Soul ,check ’em out

Is that the old compilation Atlantic Soul? I’ve got that one.

Been hearing a lot about Eil ‘paperboy’ Read – might try downloading that.
