Taking a tumble

January 26th, 2009 · Posted by Skuds in Life/Technology · No Comments · Life, Technology

We had an engineer come round today to look at our tumble drier.  Normally I would have a go myself: I like to take stuff apart in the vain hope there is something really obvious that even somebody with no spare parts, knowledge of the machinery or engineering talent could fix.   Never happened so far, but it is always worth a try. This time I managed to resist the temptation because the machine is still under warranty, being only a few weeks old, and would therefore be sorted out for free or replaced.  Also the symptoms pointed to an electrical fault and my track record with electricity is poor.

Predictably, the engineer spent about ten minutes to find and fix the problem, which was something that even I could have spotted: the metal underwiring from a bra had somehow got through the holes in the drum and caused a short circuit.  I knew from the way the main circuit in the house blew that there was a short somewhere – I just expected it to be more subtle than that.

Still…  my original diagnosis turned out to be oddly accurate: that the machine had gone tits-up.
